Abstract

This study aims to describe the influence of the Malay culture and customs on the Malaysian peninsula on the architectural forms of houses and mosques. The discussion is carried out on architectural elements with the object of discussion of houses and mosques. The traditional Malay house has a house topology on stilts with high poles, a layered roof, the primary material with wooden structures, and many openings (ventilations) that illustrate adaptation to the tropical climate. The type of house is determined by its roof shape, namely Bumbung Panjang, Bumbung Limas, Bumbung Perak, and Bumbung Perak Bumbung Limas. On the other hand, a mosque is a very important building for the Malay community because it is a space for congregational prayer and a formal education/teaching center for religious education, and an administrative center for communities. The overall impression of the mosque is described as a building with a flat hypostyle roof. This typology follows a religious concept of Malaysian people regarding many aspects of design on the holiness of mosques designed to develop seven architectural elements

Abstract

Spatial invasion is a subjective expression of low-income communities in the riverbank areas. This lifestyle is one of the expressions of society to meet the lack of spatial space in residential areas, especially in riverbank areas. The previous study stated several things, the invasion of the lifestyle of the riverside community has occurred especially when the settlements were divided spatially. Besides, the precedent for the rusunawa in Surabaya shows its design by providing spaces that connected spaces, units, and buildings, which are usually invaded by the inhabitants for domestic and social activities. Qualitative studies were obtained to find the configuration of spatial invasion through activity observations and in-depth interviews with several participants living in riverbank settlements. This study analyses whether the use of space in the flat can be designed under similar activities and the use of spatial intervention in the kampung settlement, in this context near the river border. The results showed that there were similarities in the use of public spaces in residential areas and rusunawa, namely eventual space invasion that is used as the design concept. Shared space for community activities in the settlements can be adopted and provided in flat design with the support of several architectural elements. These expressions are then simulated into several concept illustrations of a flat design proposal with several required conditions. The result proposes several potentials of space in the flat that can be used for domestic and social interests.

Abstract

The hospital building is designed to fulfill and accommodate every user's needs, namely patient and general users/visitors. The users discussed in this research are patients and general users. This research aims to determine preferences (reasons for choosing), perceptions (strengths and weaknesses), and user’s expectations (patients and general users) of Mother & Child Hospital. The research was conducted qualitatively using a grounded theory approach. Data were collected using an online questionnaire containing open-ended main questions and distributed freely (non-random sampling). The collected data analyzed qualitatively using the content analysis (open coding) method. The result show Mother & Children Hospital’s patient and general user’s differences in preferences, perception, and expectations on visual architectural aspects, non-visual architectural aspects, and non-architectural aspects. The preferences, perceptions, and expectations of patients and general users tend to be non-architectural in terms of their preferences. There is only one difference, it's in the general user's perception of the Mother & Children Hospital's weakness, where the perception lies in the visual architectural aspect. The tendency for patients and general users are found in the category of service, facilities, quality of medical personnel, location, and parking.

Abstract

Competitions are a significant means of focusing on specific spaces in cities and forming public opinion. Competitions result in many professionals such as architectures, urban planners, urban designers, landscape architects, civil engineers, etc. proposing lots of designs for the same space, and thereby submitting various solution offers for it. Therefore, competitions are important not only for their results, but also for increasing knowledge about the occupational groups of design and the shaping of urban open spaces and built environments, in other words, cities. This study analyzes competitions’ contributions to urban design based on the experience of Merzifon Municipality’s Business and Life Center Architectural Project Competition. The discipline of urban design, which plays an important role in forming the urban open spaces and built environments, is enriched by competitions. The approaches developed in the projects that compete for the urban spaces focused on the competitions play an important role in shaping cities.
